I'm kind of excited for this year. I've never had the base that I do right now this early in the year. I'm excited to get on some speed work and get faster. Like I say in the banner above, I'd like to have a sub 21:00 5k this year, and if I hit that, push it under 20:00 for next year, but I have a lot of work to do.
To give you an idea how far off I am, yesterday I did a couple intervals in the middle of my run to get me started and prepare my legs for a longer speed workout next Wednesday. I did 4:00 at 7:05 pace with a 3:00 rest, did that twice, and was pretty tuckered at the end of the second 4:00. I'd have to go 20 seconds per mile faster for 21:00 straight to pull off my goal. On second thought, that doesn't sound that bad, but it will require me to be consistent in my training and to not slack off during any of my speed days.
These sunny days are really increasing my motivation to get out and run. It's been a couple months since I've been excited for a run, but spring has a way of helping me get that excitement back.
